It is with sadness we have to announce that with effect from 12th February 2008 Glenkens Broadband Ltd. has ceased trading and all services have terminated. Glenkens Broadband Ltd. was formed in December 2003 to bring high speed Internet services to an area of approximately 400 sq. Km centred around Balmaclellan, New Galloway & Dalry in rural South West Scotland. Initial financial assistance on a 50% funding basis was made available by Scottish Enterprise Dumfries & Galloway, without this assistance no service would have been possible. At the time of formation BT's exchanges were not equipped for ADSL and there was no prospect of this happening. However, within 12 months BT did finally publish a program of exchange activations. Unfortunately coupled with the initial low take-up of Broadband and the high cost of providing Broadband via Wireless/Satellite this made an already poor financial case for a commercial alternative to BT's service pretty much unviable. Most exchanges in the area were ADSL enabled in the last half of 2005, it was expected that there would be a mass migration from our services to ADSL, but in actual fact the majority of customers remained loyal to us. Regrettably no ongoing financial assistance has been available and this has forced the shutdown, most customers have been able to transfer to ADSL services provided via their phone line, but some are either now without service or will have to pay substantially more to receive service via Satellite.
